I think Kander’s recent work, especially the heart-breaking KID VICTORY, is among the best he’s ever done. Wow.

Laura, who can’t believe she’s sitting here at 6:30 in LA with her coffee, and she’s the first to post this! (Aw,, spoke too soon! I’m third!)

Following the link to the Deadline article (in the post that follows this one) will forestall lots of chatter and angst among our crowd, as it notes that the De Niro and Minnelli characters will not appear in the new show. So we don't have to debate who could possibly replace Liza -- though of course we CAN and we probably will...

That's going to be the problem - people will probably be expecting a Liza (or a Sinatra?) to deliver the title song. Even if they haven't seen the movie, they know she was in it and sang that song (and the others).

Why didn't the simply come up with a new title, for god's sake, so that the comparison to the film would be at a minimum to begin with?

Because the title, of course--and especially the famous song that goes with it--is what is expected to sell the tickets.

John Kander is amazing! I regret not being able to see Kid Victory (I, too, heard it was wonderful) but hope to see a tour of Scottsboro Boys, which I was lucky enough to see a couple of times.
