| Bay Street Theater's RAGTIME is one of the best ensemble casts I have ever seen, anywhere. This extraordinary group of EIGHTEEN actors create a magnificent and thoroughly moving production. Under the visionary direction of Will Pomerantz and inspired musical arrangements of musical director James Bassi, this brilliant production creates laughter, tears and stunning emotional impact. Hats off to the creative team: it is an absolute pleasure to hear an entire cast of highly gifted actors truly SING a score. The technical production elements create an immersive miracle with a few moving platforms, prop pieces and the clever use of the entire house for staging. Derrick Davies, as Coalhouse Walker, is the embodiment of what a Broadway leading man with TRUE STAR QUALITY should be: a master of his actor's craft, a voice of great quality and power, combined with matinee idol good looks and charismatic presence. Moving portrayals of Mother, Tateh and Sarah ( Lora Lee Geyer, Zachary Prince and Kyrie Courter respectively) are thrown into relief by the astonishing perpetual motion of the remaining 14 gifted actors (shout out to Harrison Bryan, a promising newcomer). The ensemble deftly create a rich tapestry of America at the turn of the twentieth century. Chillingly all the forces in conflict in 1906 are still causing headlines and strife today, spotlighting the injustice at the heart of what passes for American democracy. Ragtime at Bay Street theater is a MUST SEE. Rent a car take the Jitney, ride the train and grab the commuter bus. Totally worth the effort --- catch it before it closes Sunday Aug. 28! (If Calliope and her band of Muses are out there-- find a way to bring this production and cast to NYC! ) | |
