PRETTY WOMAN: Broadway Versus Tour -- Question About Recoupment
Posted by: BroadwayTonyJ 01:20 pm EDT 08/27/22

It has been announced recently that the Pretty Woman national tour has recouped its investment. Paula Wagner is the lead producer for both the Broadway production and the tour. Does that mean that the investors in the Broadway production have also realized a profit? Or are the Broadway production and the touring production totally separate entities?

Am I asking these questions correctly?

You are mostly asking correctly but the answer is we (or at least I) can't answer most of the questions you have without knowing how the tour was structured. There are a number of possible arrangements. (Perhaps someone here knows more specifics and can chime in.) What we do know is that this does not mean the original investors (whether or not they are identical to the tour investors) have realized a profit. They may have seen some revenue from the tour but at tour recoupment there is no "profit" in the tour and even if there were a considerable tour profit, from what I gather about the Broadway production (and again you or someone else may know more or might be less lazy than I am and look it up), even a profit from the tour (meaning positive cash flow after the tour recoupment) would not likely get close to the amount remaining to reach the Broadway production's recoupment. Could such a day be reached? In theory, yes. I would not hold my breath.

I think they are separate corporations—llc

So like you said the recoup of one does not mean the other recoups. I assume the money flowing to the broadway production corporation is part of the licensing that the tour llc pays. I assume it’s a percentage of the tour gross. I wonder what that typical is—5% maybe to broadway llc. The license of course is much higher percentage because the creators, director and others get percentages.

The broadway production cost $17m according to Forbes and lasted 12 months. The first few months were just over $1m/wk but it dropped to break even from Jan to august. So my guess is only a few million of the $17m were recouped.

It’s probably why the books on a broadway production aren’t closed for years after the show closes because of the residuals from the tours and international productions.
