Posted by: jaymac 09:51 am EDT 08/29/22

Are dress circle seats good view?

or should I get table seats? where? please give recommendations.

Saw four London shows last month, and while The Seagull, Patriots, and Jerusalem were terrific, Cabaret was a hugely disappointing, lethargic waste of time (and of course the most expensive ticket by far). None of the Act I numbers performed inside the club landed. Particularly useless was Fra Fee's wooden understudy or substitute as the Emcee. Finally, with the last number before intermission the performance woke up and Act II was much better, although the stretch between "Cabaret" and the end took forever.

I sat in Dress Circle H12, and thought the view was great. I wish I could say the same thing about the production...

I sat down front and stage left. It made leaving difficult, but I did walk out and didn’t return. I hardly ever do that. This was about three casts in. I understand that there’s a new cast playing it now. Hoping it’s better than when I saw it.

I'm curious about the cast you saw.

I saw Fra Fee as the Emcee and Amy Lennox as Sally. Although I wouldn't describe either of their performances as great (though his was fantastically sung--definitely the best I've heard the Emcee sung), my problems with the production were far more about the direction than the actors.

Sorry, Daniel, I can’t remember. I do believe that it was the third set of leads, if that helps. I was in London June 1 through July 25.

I saw the original cast.

I liked the supporting performances, particularly Liza Sadovy and Anna-Jane Casey. I thought the direction was intellectually sloppy, a two-act game of "hey, wouldn't it be cool if we...?" that didn't have enough of a unifying concept behind it to bring all the different threads together, and I *hated* the two leads, both of whom gave toxically self-indulgent performances at the (late) preview I saw.

And while I have no particular objection to the word itself, and can hardly claim I never use it myself, I don't ever need to hear a Sally Bowles sing "toodle-f***ing-ooo" in Mein Herr again.

(In a revival of Cabaret, I also don't particularly need to hear Mein Herr as well as Don't Tell Mama, but that ship appears to have sailed.)

And I think there are some *issues* with turning a show about the insidious rise of fascism in Weimar Germany into an expensive, exclusive-ticket theme event with a lobby preshow and a cash (well, contactless) bar. For me, the production came down on the wrong side of the line, massaging the audience rather than implicating them.

A lot of people liked it a lot more than I did, including friends whose taste I respect, but for me it didn't really work on any level.

I sat in the second row of the Dress Circle and thought it was a perfect seat. Did a week day matinee and the box office a few day before had a few good seats available better than the evening performances. Liked the basement entrance underbelly of a cabaret and a free drink as you tour around before you actually enter the cabaret environment. The theatre is one long block down from Trafalgar Square a stones throw from the Thames.

Such a stone's throw from the river that I always worry what might happen if the river level rose! (Fingers crossed the Thames Barrier holds up.)

Thanks should I book ahead, or just chance it at box office?

Box offices along West End get cancelations and if your there at the right time., it can be to your advantage. When I saw the show in May there were no discounts circulating.

I agree
I sat in the stalls and if I had to do it again would go for Dress Circle first or second row.
I would also choose the half of the theater with rows A-E
Not the side with rows K onward. I felt like the show played more to that half. I also had some obstructions even though I was center 5th row stalls on that side. (There’s an overhang that is not on the other side)

Any rumours that it might transfer to NYC?

I would think that with Eddie and Jessie it might be a possibility for a transfer.

My only interest in a revival of CABARET would be an actual revival of the original stage version that no one does anymore. I want the whole club onstage. I don’t want to sit in it. I want The Telephone Song and Meeskite and Why Should I Wake Up. At this point, it would be revelatory. Encores should do it.

Great suggestion! The original version was such a groundbreaking musical for so many reasons. The score was a bonafide knockout back in 1966, especially "Meeskite", "Why Should I Wake Up", and the other song you cite. I love Fosse's film but I really regret never being able to see a staging of the original Cabaret. I second your call for an Encores mounting.

Hear! Hear! What a great idea. Ever since Chris became gay or bisexual, courtesy of Michael York in the film, we've lost that trajectory, the romance of Sally and Cliff. And "Perfectly Marvelous" is a great song. Yes. That would be a real treat. To see what it was before Fosse et al had their decadent way with it. How times have changed.

It's been mentioned many times over. The Hudson theatre is constantly brought up. It will come here because this version and design has made it a major hit at The Playhouse on the West End.
