| I've always heard that it was brilliant but I can't get a sense of the visuals. I'm familiar with the track on the OCR but was it longer with perhaps dialogue fragmented within it? Or was it one continuous number like on the recording. All I can gather is that it was a tight group of dancer moving about the stage as one while making stylistic movements and poses. Can anyone who saw it comment? | |

| Yes, it was Fosse-esque. Tight and stylized. | |

| It wasn't longer. There were just a couple of lines of dialogue during the music you hear on the cast recording. The music did continue as underscoring when the scene with Chuck, Dobitch and Sylvia Gilhooley started. There may have been some choreographic movement continuing under the dialogue, but simpler and less noticeable. Have you read Ken Mandelbaum's A Chorus Line and the Musicals of Michael Bennett? I think you may have but I'm not sure. There are quotes about the staging of the sequence from Graciela Daniele, Donna McKechnie and Bob Avian. Those may be helpful, if you haven’t already read them. I am linking a page of color photos of the original production. A bunch of the photos are of the “Grapes of Roth” scene and perhaps they will give you a slightly better idea. If you haven’t recently searched for Promises, Promises photos on the NYPL digital gallery, you may not have seen some of these. The photos of the scene are not all together in one area on the page. There are more photos in the NYPL digital gallery of the original production of Promises, Promises and the tours of the production, but I am linking a selection that I think may be of particular interest and may help answer your question a bit. If you do a general search on the title, more photos will come up. If you’re not used to the vagaries of the NYPL digital gallery, it is possible that some or all of the photos may not be currently available. If that happens, try again later. NYPL seems unable to fix this. Until a few years ago, this never happened. Maybe they just have too many photos now, and I guess they haven’t hired anyone with sufficient technical knowhow to fix the problem. Btw, in case you don’t know, the number was not listed in playbills for the original production. It was probably felt to be a transition sequence that did not need to be listed as a separate number. |

| Just adding a note that although all the photos on the page I linked say Original Broadway Production, and all the ones I had clicked on that had faces immediately recognizable to me were of the OBC, some of the photos are from the bus-and-truck tour. I thought that perhaps some of the "Turkey Lurkey" photos I had clicked on that were not OBC (although several on that page are the OBC) might have been with Broadway replacements, but I think they may all be the bus-and-truck company. | |

| The link you gave is to a performance of Turkey Lurkey Time, so it does not answer any question about the Grapes of Roth. Bennett's choreography for Grapes of Roth was never recorded. |
