| Regarding the GRAND HOTEL Cast Recording issues, a very knowledgeable source (frontrowcentre2) posted the following on BroadwayWorld back in 2008: The problem was the music publication rights. Wright & Forrest who had written the original score of AT THE GRAND were upset not so much with the Maury Yeston interpretations but with the fact that Yeston re-wrote some of their songs. The Wright-Forrest songs were published (in their original unaltered versions) on one folio and the Yeston songs in another. Apparently Wright & Forrest wanted the score recorded the original way. By the time that was all sorted out most of the labels had lost interest. The album was done in April 1992 and landed in stores about a month AFTER the show had closed. Many of the recording labels also considered the show primarily a "dance" show not necessarily crying out for a cast recording. I also think I have read that a huge amount of the financing for the recording ultimately came from orchestrator Peter Matz. |

| Broadway producer/general manager Gary Grunas and recording executive/playwright Billy Rosenfield were filmed by Playbill as "Old Show Queens." The online series featured their memories of show biz lore and Broadway celebrity encounters. In episode 10 starting at around the 3:30 mark, they go into detail about their involvement with the long-delayed "Grand Hotel" Broadway cast album. All the holdups over authorship and song rights meant that leading man David Carroll was tragically unable to record his Tony Award-nominated performance as the Baron. |
