| Once upon a time, I remember how perusing the Sunday NYT Arts section was a joy. All the ads. The directory of shows. The profiles. This week … ain’t that. Only a single ad for the upcoming season. Kimberly Akimbo. The directory only lists SIX. Which means it must be the only show which sees this listing as a value. Why doesn’t NYT just publish it as a service or get rid of it. And the profile of Lea Michele’s Funny Girl debut is pretty bad. We are supposed to take Mayer at face value that he stands by Beanie’s performance 100% but calls Lea’s casting “a second chance.” Can both really be true? I assume he’s saving face but the writer could have challenged him.. like, a little. Similar problem with the conversation around the death of Cory Monteith which the article implies happened around the first time Lea almost took the part to Broadway. Is it relevant? If not, why is it in there? If so, how did her “quick education in addiction” shape her career? And what was that education? Lea’s PR team can enjoy the article. It seems to be trying to rehab her image from perceived damage. But it’s a poor piece of journalism. I’m neither a Lea person nor a Beanie person nor in any of the other Funny Girl camps that have emerged this year. But I am a NYT subscriber who is increasingly wondering why their Arts coverage is so mediocre. |

| The variety and quality of the New York Theatre scene still seems pretty vital, especially given the vicissitudes of the past three years. But like you I really miss the excitement that came with that weighty Section 2 every Sunday. The fact that it was Section 2 gives a sense of how important arts coverage was in the most influential cultural capital in the English-speaking world (don't yell at me, London). I've said it before but thinking of those two-page spreads gives me something akin the electric thrill I once enjoyed as a boy. | |

| Those arts profiles aren’t meant to be journalism, they’re meant to be PR. Therefore, the article achieved its goal. | |

| To be fair, it's Labor Day weekend, not the season kickoff. Not much going on. Anything in the paper right now is pure filler. And no, ads and the ABCs are not what they were before the internet. Do you really look at the ABCs to find out what's playing? I stopped getting my hands dirty by fondling the newsprint long enough ago that I no longer own any clothes that still bear the stains. |
