Listen, it’s very possible City Center as a whole is in trouble. BUT….

The fiasco of the first Encores season under its new leadership, shows being moved 6 months with no advance warning to subscribers, other shows being canceled or ‘postponed’ a year with no notice to new members, etc.. none of this is unique to artistic institutions, especially to coming out of a pandemic, but none of it bodes well. Maybe it’s simply that no one’s really minding the store as their longtime City Center president Arlene Shuler is stepping down imminently, and there’s not really a continuity of care anymore than there was in the handoff of Encores from stalwart Jack Viertel to tyro artistic director Lear DeBessonet. Or maybe, just maybe, City Center, with that huge space, by losing so much money in winter-spring 2020 and being vacant for nearly all of 2021, is struggling more than a lot of other NYC arts companies.

That said, if anyone can right this ship, provide good advice, give tough love, and chart a clear artistic direction, it’s newly elected City Center president Michael Rosenberg – that’s one smart guy, and hopefully he can bring some order to all this chaos.
