I think we have to acknowledge that if Company is being presented as contemporary, that there has been a very real shift in what is perceived as "older". As life expectancy has increased, and for other reasons, I think it's reasonable that Joanne "read" somewhat older than 45 (and I emphasize read because we get too caught up in the age of the actress). Because the place in life, the experiences, the nearness of one's death, are much different for a 45 year old now than in 1970. But at the same time, I don't think reading 70's is right for it either.
