Last night, I attended a gala concert at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) celebrating the career thus far of one of its best-known grads - Broadway composer Stephen Flaherty. Directed by Maria Milgrom Dodge, the concert featured CCM students, plus a number of Broadway vets including Jason Graae, Christy Altomore, Alton Fitzgerald White, and Ashley Brown. A non-advertised Special Guest who also performed was Liz Callaway. The show featured songs from the more well-known shows such as Ragtime, Anastasia, and Once On This Island, as well as from his early days writing shows (with and without Lynn Ahrens) and one number each from their latest shows - Knoxville and Little Dancer (they announced this was coming to Broadway in 2023). The audience also got to see a fully staged version of The Lorax, famously cut from Seussical. Stephen was on hand for the show and accompanied on piano for the finale. The concert featured a full orchestra and chorus and was delightful. Kudos to CCM, who used the event as a fundraiser for scholarships.
