SPOILER ALERT QUESTION - He Plays the Violin
Posted by: ImTheTop 06:01 pm EDT 09/24/22

I'm curious as to what anyone who has seen the new production of 1776 thought of the staging (and orchestration) of "He Plays the Violin"? I always understood the foreshadowing of Martha Jefferson early death in the lyric "When heaven calls to me, sing me no sad elegy," but I was not at all clear if the staging was meant to underline that. It also seemed the the directors didn't trust that the audience might not understand the Martha wasn't just singing about Jefferson's violin and they had to drive that home.

Any interpretations? I'm open to all

Thanks!
