I saw a wonderful production of the musical at a college, and it is a hysterical, charming delight from start to finish. The licensed version either doesn't include the Mr. Big song "To Be with You" or has the option of using an original song by Friedman; the latter was in the version I saw, and I've been trying to find a copy of it ever since, but YouTube has failed me.

In the Park, Daniel Breaker played The King. Berowne was Colin Donnell. Donnell's future wife, Patti Murin, was also in that production, as The Princess.

If you're going into a Michael Friedman deep dive, I highly recommend "The Fortress of Solitude". The show itself is an unworkable mess (they tried to fix it at NYU and only made it worse), but the score is my favorite thing he wrote, full of deep truths and stunning melodies that showcased his incredible skill at working in diverse musical styles without feeling like he was simply doing pastiche.

A great talent lost too soon.
