The one-act musical "Wings" by Jeffrey Lunden and Arthur Perlman, based on the play by Arthur Kopit is worth your friend's attention. It is a rich role for a mature soprano and a small cast. It's about a woman recovering from a stroke which affects her ability to speak and remember her past. As unlikely as it sounds as a musical source, it's very effective. The synth- based orchestration sounds a little dated now (it premiered at the Goodman in Chicago in 1992 and moved to the Public in 1993 with Linda Stephens in the leading role), but that could be addressed. It packs a punch. The afternoon I saw it at the Goodman is one of my most cherished theatre memories. Stephens was astounding. The late Rita Gardner was the alternate at the Public.
