That's because the score is spectacular--I'm not sure there's ever been a musical theatre composer as adept at vanishing into a musical idiom as Friedman was, except maybe Kurt Weill (and even his music always sounded like an idiom as filtered through himself). The problem is the book, which is incoherent--I only understood what was going on by reading a synopsis of the novel afterwards.
