I love the film, although I've never read the book. I have not (so far) been a fan of Wildhorn's work. I thought this could make a wonderful musical years ago. But it would be tricky to write. The story is emotional and religious. No set piece action, no reason to dance. Also, the doubting nun is the key dramatic character, not Bernadette. If you can make a compelling show about a nineteenth century painting or an eighteenth century political meeting, it is possible. Can this team work magic, a la Edwards and Stone or Lapine and Sondheim? I am skeptical, but I'd be delighted to be wrong.
