I think that’s fair. But in an era where actual middle schools are routinely performing “Junior” adaptations of hard, articulate shows like INTO THE WOODS - JR, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND JR, SEUSSICAL JR, NEWSIES JR and on and on, todays kids can reasonably expect more nuanced, insightful writing than this. As I said, it’s not that Mr. Brown is incapable of writing to that standard.

So my beef is probably with producers who decide that this kind of writing deserves a Broadway theater.

MEAN GIRLS, in my opinion, doesn’t get nearly enough credit for its writing craft. We expect that from Tina Fey, of course, but I think Jeff Richmond’s composition is insightful. It sounds like high school feels. Nell Benjamin’s lyrics are often terrific; “Apex Predator” is freaking great.

I do think that much of writing is about re-writing. And I wish they’d kept rewriting 13. That’s all.
