It wouldn’t be accurate to say I adore the MEAN GIRLS score. I do think it shouldn’t have been dismissed.

I absolutely agree with you that the pastiche is bad, mostly written for Damian. “Where Do You Belong” and “Stop” are the low points of the score in my opinion.

But I also feel like I see some great craft there. I think “Stupid With Love” accomplishes a whole, whole lot — and pretty effectively! “Apex Predator” does a great job of raising very specific stakes for three characters — and cleverly uses its food chain metaphor to balance what those three characters want (Cady, Janice, Regina). Plus it sounds cool. (A bit pastiche to lean into Avril Levigne? Perhaps. But the film soundtrack pulled songs from the 70’s, like Blondie’s “One Way or Another,” and I think it works).

But to aim to steer this toward my question, this was one of composer Jeff Richmond’s very first musicals. He’s written smaller things, including a bunch of stuff for Second City in Chicago…

But I really wanna know — how many of us here have tried to write a musical?
