Perhaps. But he’s paying the bills as a musical theater writer. And hot dang if he isn’t prolific.
Because our fairy godmother Audra blessed JRB and Adam Guettel on her 1998 breakout album, the two writers were often compared to each other two decades ago.
Addressing the comments below, I’ll agree that JRB has not delivered a terrific musical. SFANW and L5Y are his best works.
But as much as I will sing the very high praises of Adam Guettel, his mere two musicals (which are actually great, plus a freaking GORGEOUS, if rarely performed song cycle) surely are not pulling in the royalties that JRB’s shows are.
What’s better? To be prolific and maybe not all that great?
Or to have contributed two wonderful shows like FLOYD COLLINS & A LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA to the canon?
