It’s also very possible, if the poster saw the show this summer, that they heard any number of substitute musicians in the pit – whether due to run of the mill illnesses, or especially, if it was during one of the several Covid outbreaks at that particular show.
Substitute players under the best of circumstances don’t get to have a run-thru with the conductor and the rest of the band; that would be more true than ever during Covid, and if, say, a 15-piece orchestras happened to have 4 or 5 subs in at once, several of whom might have been playing the show for the first time, that could obviously very much affect the overall impression of the orchestra’s tonality and musicianship.
(Local 802 subs need to be professionally recommended and vetted, but unlike onstage cast members, they aren’t announced or identified at the time of curtain-up, nor are they obviously listed anywhere in the program.)
I’d expect any musical on Broadway to have qualified subs - but a) that doesn’t mean that they still couldn’t be underrehearsed at first, and b) while historically they generally try to limit how many regular pit players are out at one time, I wouldn’t be the least surprised if on occasion during the past 9 months or so on Broadway, more subs than ever have been filling in at the same time, and with little advance warning to the players themselves, for obvious reasons.
