Seeing Mark Baker's name again led me to wonder: Whatever happened to him? I remember hearing him sing on the 1974 cast album of ''Candide.''

Baker not only got a Tony nomination for playing Candide (directed by Hal Prince), he received a 1974 Theatre World Award for his Broadway debut.

(Actually, Baker made his real Broadway debut in ''Via Galactica,'' an infamous 1972 flop that ran for only 7 performances, so that wasn't counted.)

Baker's last Broadway show was ''Habeas Corpus'' (1975), & he won a Helen Hayes Award for playing Kringelein in 1990-92's tour of ''Grand Hotel.''

Playbill reports he died in 2018 at age 71 in Cumberland, Md., where he spent the last two decades of his life, revitalizing the Embassy Theatre.
