Watched the first two eps of AHS: NYC and surprised to see just how closely it’s following The Normal Heart and even has Joe Mantello playing a version of Larry Kramer.
In this telling, AIDS as a disease is shown to be an actual serial killer targeting the gay fetish / leather community with the police force refusing to investigate (much in the way the medical system rejected AIDS research in its earliest days). It’s quite a cast—Mantello, Dennis O’Hare, Russell Tovey, Zachary Quinto, Sandra Bernhard and you haven’t lived until you’ve seen Patti LuPone singing to a room full of naked men in the baths (and singing one of my favorites from her Patti Live album—which I happen to see during its recording).
Is it great? So far it’s not ranking up there with some of my favorite AHS seasons, but the level of acting is fantastic. Cheers to their casting team! |
