Brooks Atkinson was an absolute Broadway icon who is now being stripped of his honor because this generation doesn't know his name.
What's interesting about the choice of Brooks Atkinson in 1960 was that the theatre was already named the "Mansfield". The choice of a theater critic for the name change was to signal that the theatre was no longer in use as a CBS television studio. So the name change was a kind of symbolic cleansing of television in favor of live theater.
In terms of Brooks Atkinson himself, I don't know much about his criticism. I haven't read his book "The Lively Years". I think he was a newspaper man from the paper of record whose point of view was widely respected more than the kind of critic whose work gets published and talked about by theater lovers and taught in schools. |
