| i'm less inclined to place responsibility with Arden than with the show. It is a sledgehammer all by itself. A series of boxes being ticked about Southern bigotry, political corruption, power plays, unfair outcomes for victims who are pawns in someone else's game, etc. There isn't a single character in it who does anything other than exactly what you expect them to do, and the writing is a blunt instrument. Say what you will about the score (I am not a particular fan, but the score's not the problem) the show is a lox. Everything it says about these subjects is correct, but it's so predictable and plodding that it never surprises or enlightens. It just reports, like a tedious college history paper. |
