| *Spoilers* Saw COST OF LIVING last night and do not understand the critical adoration at all. I think it's a completely "fine" capital-P Play, but the Pulitzer? Why? How does it remotely scratch the surface of the human experience, particularly the disabled experience? We get a series of brief interactions between the disabled characters and their counterparts, but there isn't some new, novel, or interesting exploration of the human condition. Yeah, this is a challenge for all involved. Sure, there are good times and bad times. Ok ... and? The timeline is confusing: we start after the death of David Zayas' wife, but then -- and without any exposition or help -- go backwards in time to when she is still alive ... only to then bop back to the present by the end for the EXTREMELY CONTRIVED meeting of David Zayas and Kara Young. What are the chances that she'd be sleeping in her car anywhere even remotely close to where David lives? Why have Katy Sullivan's character die offstage after the effective bathtub slip? I think everyone gave fine performances, but the Gregg Mozgala and Kara Young "romance" can be seen a mile away, with the "twist" (and I use that term extremely loosely) being pretty much the most predictable thing in the world. The less said about the overly-sparse design that blandly floats between different single set items, the better. Not a bad play, but there is nothing remotely noteworthy about the form, construction, and characterizations -- other than the focus on disabled performers. But even this is not the first play to explore the intersection of abled and disabled stories. At least FAIRVIEW (a play I like more on paper than onstage) plays with the form. So what did people love about COST OF LIVING? |
