| Hi, Alan! This is actually consistent with a belief I have (that my students have gotten used to) that there is no one canonical version of shows that have been filmed or have had revivals. There's no one "Anything Goes" or "Show Boat"; and similarly Bob Fosse's Cabaret is as important as Hal Prince's, and probably more so. Similarly, I treat these works based on their content and not "this author wrote this and that author wrote that." Example: it's interesting to me that Tod means death in German, similar to Sweeney's last name. But Sweeney Todd was a character long before Sondheim and Wheeler got their hands on it. Interesting to me, but doesn't invalidate that the other fact is interesting, too. |
