A friend of a friend offered me a free ticket to see & Juliet yesterday. I was sitting near the rear of the orchestra which I don’t usually like but the Sondheim orchestra isn’t as deep as other theaters and I could see the actors’ faces fairly well considering.
The show is a lot of fun and uses hit pop songs by Max Martin and friends to retell the Romeo and Juliet story. The cast has 15 Broadway debuts and the mostly young singers and dancers are extremely attractive and likable. Stark Sands, Betsy Wolfe and Paulo Szot get to shine and newcomers Lorna Courtney and Justin David Sullivan as Juliet and May are particular standouts. Melanie LaBarrie as the nurse Angelique is very funny.
The show seems to live in the same world as Six though it has a much more intricate plot to tell a period story in a pop concert-like setting. The show has a minimal set but makes use of bright projections and dazzling lighting effectively.
I did get tired of the relentless pulsating beat of the score (due to the orchestrations) and the loud and echo-y sound design. The singers didn’t need so much amplification.
It was interesting to see quite a few little kids in the audience.
I imagine this show will do well with both New York audiences of all ages as well as tourists. But we shall see. |
