I’m going to disagree strongly here, and hold that if you’re discussing a musical’s content, especially one that has endured significant changes over the decades, and you make a specific reference, you need to state which version it appears in.
Yes, “tod” is German for death. It’s also a fox or a crafty, canny person in Scottish idioms. Interesting, sure. But I think both facts have zilch to do with the character.
