The local theater awards have done this for several years now, doubling the number of nominees in a single Lead Acting in a Musical category, with similar wording for other categories, and having two winners. I can't say I love having two winners for every category but it's probably the best option of the possible solutions.
The Grammys went to a single Best Solo Vocal Performance category for each genre 11 years ago but they did not increase the number of nominees and there is only one winner in each category. They had a different problem they were addressing back then, however, which was that they had too many categories because genres were being made into microslices. I think at the time there were over 100 categories.
For Best Solo Pop Vocal Performance, for example, there is a gender skew. Over the past 11 years, seven of the winners have been female and 4 have been male. |
