When I saw Leopoldstadt, the person behind me got a million texts during the show, with a "ping" each time. I think the person may have been answering them in the beginning but his or her seatmate said something like, "Please put your phone away," and the texts seemed to decrease in number, although they continued. It was definitely annoying.

Also at that same performance, someone's phone went off several rows from me and after several rings, I heard an exasperated voice say, "Can you turn that off" and it stopped. I can only assume the seatmate wouldn't have said that if the offender was trying at all to turn off the phone on their own.

In both cases, the momentary disruption from the intervention was much better IMO than letting the disruption go on.
