I think if anything comic books had greater cultural reach back then. For one thing, television was later believed to have hurt comic books. When there was a newspaper strike in 1945, LaGuardia read the comic strips every day over the radio. And Superman was also a comic strip. I think the Spewacks were likely pretty aware of comic books and strips as pop-culture references were part of their work. They had both worked on newspapers (she on a Socialist paper, he on the New York World).
In what seems to me the unlikely event that they didn't know Lois Lane was a character in the Superman, surely someone on the Kiss Me, Kate creative team would have known.
There was a musical based on a comic strip as early as 1908, Little Nemo, music by Victor Herbert, who evidently didn't look down on comic strips even as source material. |
