The radio series and films may have been targeted at kids, but Superman was in the daily comics for years and years. And unless you were Extremely Snobby and High Brow, which the Spewacks were not, everyone read the funnies. Irving Berlin did an entire number on the Sunday funny pages in 1933’s AS THOUSANDS CHEER. Would he have dared do that if only the kids in the audience were going to catch all his references?

Besides, as AlanScott noted, the Spewacks had been journalists. They knew newspapers and pop culture.

And maybe that’s the answer to this puzzle. Bella Spewack was an intrepid girl reporter. Maybe that gave her a sneaking fondness for Lois Lane of the Daily Planet, enough to name a character after her.
