I agree in part with their complaint. The problem I had was the paralleling of Jewish religious ritual with the ritual of money making so that there seemed to be a cause and effect between the two that on stage when wedded to movement seemed like a magical cabalism gone wrong, Sorcerer's Apprentice style. That might have been the choices of movement director Polly Bennett (who I'm a big fan of). But I kept wondering to myself if this was a story of a family that creates its own "Golem" which grows into a monster with its own will that no longer needs the humans who created it? Massini's original text hasn't been published in English to my knowledge so I don't know if that idea is in it or how Massini's text compares to Ben Power's adaptation which I haven't read. But I was surprised and rather confused by the connotations that were speeding past my head ("Lehman Brothers + financial algorithms = Golem") while I watched the production. At its end I had no idea what the play was saying but it was certainly beautiful and the performances fun to watch.
