I think the show did the right thing by itself by not including contrasting "up" numbers, but it just means it's hard for audiences to take, it being a musical. Prince did his best with the Big News number (I recall it began with a shoe flying out of the pub door, yes? And landing center stage) to give the mood a shot in the arm, but I don't think it provided relief.
Other shows have opportunities to lift the tone; I don't think Parade can, given the subject matter and milieu.
Doesn't mean it isn't a terrific show. |
