in the 1970s and 80s the Japanese economy was growing at warp speed. (Listen to "Next" on the OBC of Pacific Overtures). Japanese tourists (the stigma of WWII long gone) were a huge demographic. A visit to NYC meant seeing a Broadway Musical. Dancin' was perfect as it did not require fluency in English. in fact, no language skills needed at all. Fosse was a name probably known to some of them. The show opened at the Broadhurst but moved to the Ambassador (where the revival of Chicago moved). That was at a time when moving a show was easier and cheaper. But it moved to a far less desirable theatre meaning it probably had some bad weeks. At the Ambassador it ran for a long time with a lot of Japanese tourists. |
