I think Fosse's work works best in a specific context and telling a specific story. When you divorce it from that context, it can lose a lot of its impact. That's how I felt seeing FOSSE. It was a lot of great moments that just, ultimately, didn't add up to much or mean anything. As you mention about DANCIN', it seemed to have a lot of filler. Since FOSSE came on the heels of the CHICAGO revival and interest in his work was at a zenith, it struck me as a pretty naked cash grab. |
