I was also struck by that same sense when watching Dancin' in San Diego -- that Fosse dances without the context of a bigger story weren't as impactful.
That said, I still enjoyed the show FOSSE a hell of a lot more than DANCIN' because of a better selection of music and much stronger dancers -- some of whom worked with the man himself.
