| I attempted to make several points. In a general sense, I wanted to condemn those who try to shut down any speech. But I also wanted to point out the hypocrisy of Playbill and those who would make the same decision: Playbill probably loses not a penny in ending its use of Twitter; Playbill hocks lots of products on Amazon (a Playbill search is linked below). Amazon sells all sorts of hateful speech, my example of Mein Kampf being far from the only one. Playbill also has business relationships with producers and artists who stream on music services that feature songs with anti-gay and misogynistic lyrics. No divestment there. BECAUSE THEY MAKE MONEY FROM IT. Token moral outrage is erased for a dollar. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Playbill should end its business relationship with anyone on moral grounds, but I think it is downright cowardly of them to take a tiny little moral stand when it is of no consequence to them. All the while, they earn street cred with the censorship crowd. It would be intellectually consistent of Playbill to sever ties with any purveyor of content deemed hateful or offensive. |
