The n word is used a couple of time in the original lyrics by Gilbert and Sullivan in The Mikado (London and New York 1885). The references are to the then popular white performers in blackface minstrel shows. In response to complaints the lyrics were changed in 1948 at the request of Rupert D'Oyly Carte by AP Hebert to those familiar today. |
