| I wish I could. I have heard a little something about this rumor before, but I can't remember what. You know me. I'm fascinated with the history of awards, even though I think they're nonsense. But they reveal stuff about what was going on at the time. So the history is interesting. But this is too recent for me to have read about it. :) It's all hearsay, and hearsay I've heard little of. A Proquest search on pulitzer drama "ben brantley" caroline "i am my own wife" kushner brought nothing helpful, although it did bring a very funny John Heilpern piece in which he awarded Brantley his annual "Foot in Mouth" award, making Brantley a two-time winner. :) I then tried a few alternate combinations of search terms that also brought nothing helpful. Not that it's much help, but I'm linking the Pulitzer prizes site's page on the 2004 awards. There were four judges in addition to Brantley as chair. I don't know much about two of them, but it's hard for me to imagine Brantley being successfully able to push around Robert Brustein and Linda Winer. If there was a consensus about Caroline, or Change deserving to win, it would have won. Perhaps he was able to keep it from being among the pieces listed publicly as a finalist, but if that is the case, it suggests to me that few if any of the others felt strongly that it should win. Of course, I could be wrong. Does anyone here know if anyone on that year's jury ever talked about this publicly? I'd love to know. |
