Give that article another read: he was hired for the gig (it was a one-time job) in March for an April performance, and then was asked to "step back" shortly after he was hired. So he wasn't with the show for eight months before he was fired.
I agree with you that someone made a huge mistake, which clearly was in hiring Mr. Wann, and then not offering to pay him when it was discovered that the production wanted a Back ASL performer. Lord knows, Disney has more than enough money to eat the mistake.
I don't think the show is wrong in deciding that they want to cast Black actors to sign the show... though it's a bit shortsighted to say that there should be Black signers because the show is set in Africa when the cast of the show is not all Black. Perhaps the real complaint here is that it's time to re-think having white actors playing Scar, Zazu, Timon, Pumbaa, and Ed. |
