| Even though I agree that it is right and understood for the pendulum to be swinging in the direction of BIPOC performers (etc) right now, I agree with you. In this case, given that the cast is not uniformly black (as noted by someone else), and also given that the interpreter had already been hired (so there was no restriction on hiring at the time), I think this has been handled extremely badly. With the show currently celebrating its 25th anniversary (not accounting for COVID, but yes, it opened 25 years ago), this was NOT the time to be creating this kind of ugliness. A real stain on the show's legacy. |
