Rereading this Riedel piece - it was really horrible how Bernadette Peters was treated during Gypsy. It reminds me of the recent reevaluation of how other female stars were treated in this era. I would argue she got the last laugh with that Tonys performance. But still, it was mean and beneath Riedel.
Having said that, Riedel and Brantley were key components of the Broadway scene during their reign. I’m not sure there is any columnist today including Jesse Green has that sway anymore. |
