I agree with that. I mean just the lack of consideration for musicals as worthy most of the time makes me not respect the award as much as I might. But I think the record is largely more in their favor than not in terms of awarding deserving plays, whether or not that establish a staying power in terms of being produced often over decades and/or being taught, or not. The list of what works and what writers they've given it to is pretty strong, even with many sad omissions and at least a handful or two of unremarkable/mediocre/forgettable choices.

But there are many musicals I think should have been finalists or winners in their years (of course they didn't start saying the finalists until 1983, so many on my list might have been strongly in the running), including: Show Boat, Oklahoma, Porgy and Bess, West Side Story, Gypsy, Follies, Hair, Chicago, Dreamgirls, Falsettos, Assassins, Floyd Collins, Ragtime, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Parade, The Wild Party (LaChiusa), Grey Gardens, and of course Caroline or Change. And keep in mind, not everything here is listed because it's the greatest ever, but the combo of writing and subject ... hell, if In the Heights can be a finalist and Rent and even Next to Normal can win, then certainly Parade, Grey Gardens and Dreamgirls could have been finalists.

There are other musicals worthy of such an honor in terms of the level of writing, but that are not "about" America or saying enough about the specific experience of living in America, or taking place in America, so I didn't include them.
