I’ve seen Santino Fontana in almost every show he’s done in NYC and in several concerts but I believe this was his first solo evening at 54 Below tonight. It was simply terrific and the audience got to pick numbers out of a box to determine what song he would sing next. He sang several melodies from Cinderella and Love Is an Open Door from Frozen as a fun duet between Hans and Dorothy Michaels but there were some lovely surprises like I Met a Girl from Bells Are Ringing, the title song from She Loves Me, Too Many Tomorrows (in an Italian accent) from Sweet Charity, How to Handle a Woman from Camelot, If I Loved You from Carousel, Dear Ophelia from God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater and a mashup of Almost Like Being in Love and This Can’t Be Love that Judy Garland sang at Carnegie Hall in 1961. He also accompanied himself on the piano to sing Where Do You Start?, a classic ballad by Alan and Marilyn Bergman and Johnny Mandel.

Santino ended with one of my favorite songs, They Were You, from The Fantasticks which I believe was the first show he did when he came to New York. He sang it a cappella and pointed out when he did the musical, it was performed without mikes. A beautiful way to conclude a delightful evening. Looking forward to seeing Santino next in Your Own Thing at Symphony Space. And congratulations on the birth of his second baby. He’ll be at 54 Below a few more nights.
