There's nothing wrong with it, but if the intent is to have a play about African animals performed by people of Sub-Saharan African heritage, then it should be addressed in the primary casting, and not in the occasional ASL performance. But it sounds like the Head of ASL has a goal for the show that is not shared by the larger production.
