For that matter, isn't an ASL interpreter really a service provider rather than a "performer?" I can see where the line is blurred, but still...
I suppose the whole thing could have been one degree worse. The interpreter in question can hear (though he was born to deaf parents). Had he also been hearing-impaired, it could have been seen as firing a marginalized worker for the sake of someone also marginalized but from a different community. At least that's not in play.
