I had promised my copy to Karen Ziemba who's husband Bill is reading now ( I don't keep books so pass then along so they can live again ). That promise got me to finish in 7 days during a busy week! I know Billy Stritch passed his onto Linda Lavin. Karen, Billy and I knew a few of the names in the book which makes it such a fun read! I think the oddest thing in it is that George Abbott's daughter Judy also called him "Mister Abbott"! Oh, and I have a few Mister Abbott stories!
When I moved in with my other half 31 years ago he worked as a horticulturist for Hal Prince, Sondheim, Ruth Mitchell & Florence Klotz and the perks were parties, final dress rehearsals and from Flossie two costume sketches from a musical's cut dream scene! And also taking to "the help" I got a lot of stories! One housekeeper was constantly listening into phone calls ( it was either that or actually work ) and I gladly listened to all she repeated.
And speaking of Mister Abbott I met his lovely widow Joy at wedding reception and during our conversation she asked me "Are you in theater?" and without missing a beat stated "Yes. I'm in the audience". She loved that!
"Shy" also gives us a Broadway that no long exists in a New York City that's constantly changing!
