When I saw it in an earlier pre-Covid iteration I thought that this “Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish” was a remarkable production. I do not know Yiddish and am confident it's not necessary to know it to "get" this production. Even so, hearing it in Yiddish somehow brings alive multiple dimensions of the story. I had only seen Fiddler once (in its 2004/05 Bway revival - with Harvey F). This production fully humanizes its characters and knows how to allow details to inform it while maintaining an eloquent simplicity. It hones in on its theme with the beautiful power of daylight illuminating the richness of human life in the specifics of a threatened schtetl and from sunrise to sunset. I teared up more than once and hope to see it again. It makes a first rate case for Fiddler as great musical theater.
