I'm glad the Grammys cracked down on the number of ''principal soloists.'' It was getting out of hand: 10 for ''Hamilton,'' 8 for ''Evan Hansen,'' etc.
In recent history, the Grammy often goes to the Tony winner for Best Musical, but there have been some unexpected choices:
1963: ''No Strings'' wins over ''Oliver!'' and ''Stop the World, I Want to Get Off.''
1976: ''The Wiz'' wins over ''A Chorus Line'' and ''Chicago.'' (I guess it's true: Nobody beats ''The Wiz.'')
1997: ''Riverdance'' wins over ''Rent'' and ''Bring in da' Funk, Bring in da' Noise.''
And in the Grammy universe, ''Funny Girl'' beats ''Hello, Dolly!'; ''Dreamgirls'' wins over ''Nine,'' and ''Wicked'' defeats ''Avenue Q.'' |
