When I saw Billy Crystal's 700 Sundays, the actor you are probably referring to was in the audience but apparently was well behaved.
Nevertheless, may he RIP.
I've seen at least 600 plus shows in New York, beginning in '93 and can only cite 4 or 5 examples of really bad audience behavior that threatened to ruin the show. There were 3 examples of hecklers, none of which could be handled by theatre management despite the best efforts of ushers, house managers, and others. In two cases the lead actor on stage basically had to confront the jerk and shut him and/or her up. There was really no alternative that I could see.
Another incident involved a special needs child that was handled deftly by the female actor on stage without harming the show.
